Mapetla Mohapi was the first person to be detained under Section 6 of the Terrorism Act.

With profound respect and admiration, we remember the life and legacy of Mapetla Mohapi, a fearless Black Consciousness movement activist who dedicated his life to the fight against oppression. Tragically, his life was cut short when he was killed in detention at Kei Road Police Station by the apartheid Regime on August 5th August 1976.

He is one of those who refused to leave their country even when it was clear that death was imminent.

As an occasional correspondent for the Daily Despatch, Mapetla’s voice echoed his people’s struggles and aspirations. His close collaboration with the late Steve Biko, a leading figure in the Black Consciousness movement, exemplified his unwavering commitment to the cause.

Today, we honour Mapetla’s memory by acknowledging the deteriorating state of South Africa in all areas – political, social, and economic. He would be disheartened to see the continued suffering of the Black majority, including his own children, whom he sacrificed so much to liberate.

In August 2017, Mohapi’s family visited the Kei Road Police Station, where he was murdered 41 years ago, but the then-station commander denied the family access to the cell where Mohapi’s body was found. Photo: muslimviews.co.za

Let us draw inspiration from Mapetla’s courage and conviction. May his legacy fuel our collective efforts to build a more just and equitable society where the sacrifices of heroes like Mapetla are not in vain.

Mapetla Mohapi’s revolutionary spirit was ignited by the likes of Frantz Fanon, Kwame Nkrumah, Julius Nyerere, and Robert Mangaliso Sobukwe, among others, who dedicated their lives to the total liberation of Africa. He deeply understood the theory and practice of the Black Consciousness movement, which fueled his passion for activism.

Mapetla’s instrumental role in establishing Black Consciousness programs, such as the Zimele Trust Fund and the Zanempilo Clinic in King William’s Town, demonstrated his commitment to supporting families of political prisoners and providing essential services to marginalised black communities.

His inspiring leadership and vision continue to influence a new generation of Black Consciousness-inclined organisations and individuals, ensuring that his legacy endures. Through his work, Mapetla embodied the principles of selflessness, compassion, and dedication to the fight for true freedom and ownership of the means of production by the Black Majority.

May we honour his memory by continuing to draw inspiration from his life’s work and striving for a world that reflects the values he held dear – a world where the African majority is truly free and empowered to reach its full potential.

Rest in Power, Mapetla Mohapi. Your revolutionary spirit lives on!
